At first glance, electronic cigarettes appear relatively simple. A cartridge containing liquid nicotine in varying strengths and flavours is heated, releasing an aromatic vapour which tastes and feels like cigarette smoke, but which lacks both the unpleasant smell, and crucially the carcinogens, of tobacco.

However, behind this apparent simplicity lies some very advanced micro-electronic technology. Manufacturers of electronic cigarettes must ensure that their products do not overheat, have reasonable battery life, deliver a safe dose of nicotine vapour to users, deliver vapour of a consistent flavour and consistency… the list goes on and on, and all the principal manufacturers invest large sums to ensure their products meet the levels of quality and reliability quite rightly expected by their customers.

Electronic cigarette manufacture is a competitive field and no manufacturer can really afford to cut corners on research, development and quality control. If electronic cigarette users feel that a particular brand does not meet their expectations or provide them with the best possible smoking experience, there is nothing to stop them immediately transferring their allegiance to a different brand.

Any electronic cigarette manufacturer who wishes to stay in business must ensure their products provide users with the enjoyable, reliable experience that will keep them coming back for more.

Technology is a notoriously fast-moving field. Computers and smartphones are obsolete as soon as they roll out of the door – yesterday’s exciting innovation is tomorrow’s old news. If they don’t have the products to grab attention, generate headlines and credibly compete with rivals, even the biggest names can find themselves in real trouble. Research and development costs money but pays major dividends.
